For some, it’s a subject that causes instant embarrassment. For others, it’s a source of light relief (sorry!).
It’s tougher for women, who don’t have the same… how should I put it? ‘Flexibility’ in such situations as men. It’s bad enough in the normal course of the day if there are no immediate facilities, but what about in more extreme situations?
What if you’re halfway up a rock face and you get the Call of Nature? Perhaps you don’t trust the conveniences while camping or at a festival (and who could blame you)?
It’s a far from perfect situation, but is bound to happen!
Fortunately, help is at hand, in the shape of the SheWee. Whether you’ve heard of them and are curious about their use, or this is completely new to you, you might find that the SheWee is exactly what you’ve been needing.
Firstly, what exactly is a SheWee? For a lot of women, myself included, it was hard to get my head around the idea of calling it, “that awful funnel” thing. It’s an odd thing for us to do, wee in a funnel standing up, but there are lots of situations where options are limited. Yes, the SheWee is based on a funnel shape. There is a directional spout and the other end that is designed to fit against your body.
How the SheWee works
To use the SheWee, you can either undo or tug down the front of your trousers, pushing your underwear to one side.
Hold the wider end tightly against yourself, allowing you to wee discretely, either by a tree or in a toilet for example.
Fortunately, the funnel has a liquid repellent coating to avoid any drips, but you can use the device to help shake any off if you don’t have paper.
Return the SheWee back to its pouch for washing later.
One of the main worries for women is how hygienic the SheWee is. The most important piece of advice is to remember to wash it when you’re next able to do so. It’s hand washable and machine washable too, so you can give it a thorough clean for next time.
This gadget has become a bit of a lifesaver, especially when I go climbing or hiking, but the most valuable piece of advice I can offer is to practice. Everyone’s different, so it’s worth trying it out at home before you get desperate!
